Laboratory tests: “Mapping” our health

By Dr. Stefanos Pavlidis*

Laboratory tests are one of the most important tools available for monitoring our health. These tests serve as a means to decode the condition of our body. But what are the essential laboratory tests, and how can they help us improve our health and well-being?

Hematology tests

Hematology tests are the most common among all categories of medical laboratory tests and include the count of red and white blood cells, platelets, and other blood components. For example, a complete blood count (CBC) can reveal whether anemia is present, a condition in which the red blood cell count is low. Additionally, white blood cell indicators can indicate the presence of an infection or inflammation in the body.

Biochemical Tests

Biochemical tests analyze the chemical composition of blood and other bodily fluids. Markers such as glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides provide information about metabolism and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, while the measurement of creatinine and urea helps assess kidney function.

Hormone Tests

Hormone tests assess the balance of hormones in the body, which is crucial for its proper function. For example, thyroid tests can reveal hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, conditions that can significantly impact energy levels and metabolism.

Immunology Tests

These tests assess the condition of the immune system and can detect autoimmune diseases or allergic reactions. For example, measuring immunoglobulins can indicate whether the body is effectively responding to infections.

Genetic Testing

Genetic testing provides information about our genes and can reveal if there is a predisposition to certain diseases. Although these tests are not routine for everyone, they can be particularly useful in families with a history of hereditary conditions.

It is important to note that, living in an era of technological aids, visualizing test data is extremely helpful and useful in understanding results. Graphical representations, such as charts and diagrams, can make the data more accessible and comprehensible. This approach helps patients track changes in their health over time and identify trends that may require attention.

In conclusion, laboratory tests are a valuable tool for monitoring and improving our health. By understanding the basic principles and using simple examples and visualizations, we can gain a clear picture of our health and, in collaboration with our doctor, make timely and effective decisions regarding our healthcare. After all, prevention is the best cure!
