Alex test: Allergies detection with a simple blood test

by Kyriakos Yiannoukas*

Allergies are a very common condition that affects an increasing number of people. According to WHO, up to 30% of the global population suffers from some form of allergy.

An allergy is defined as the immune system's reaction to an environmental element that, under normal conditions, should not be considered a threat. However, the body perceives it as dangerous and immediately activates defense mechanisms.

Skin rashes, difficulty in breathing, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and stomach disturbances are just some of the symptoms of allergies. Beyond these discomforts, allergies can also lead to severe conditions, such as anaphylaxis, which, if not treated promptly, can be life-threatening.

In modern medicine, early diagnosis is the key to the proper management of allergies. Fortunately, today there are tests that allow us to accurately identify the allergens that trigger reactions in the body. One of the most advanced diagnostic tools is the ALEX2 Allergy Explorer, which is also available in Cyprus. It is the first laboratory test that simultaneously detects up to 300 allergens, providing a comprehensive overview of the patient‘s allergic sensitivity.

The ALEX2 Allergy Explorer works with a simple blood sampling, requiring no special preparation from the patient. Through its groundbreaking nanoparticle technology, it accurately measures both total and specific IgE antibodies produced by the immune system upon exposure to allergens.

This test serves as a valuable tool for:

  • Determining the causes of allergic reactions.
  • Preventing asthma onset.
  • Identifying the allergens that require immunotherapy.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of immunotherapy.
  • Investigating food allergies and anaphylactic episodes.
  • Veryfying an existing allergy diagnosis.

Keep in mind that this test is suitable even for infants who have shown an anaphylactic reaction or asthma symptoms, and for toddlers with chronic allergic issues such as rhinitis, runny nose, and irritated eyes.

The diagnosis of an allergy is the first step. The correct therapeutic approach, tailored to the needs of each patient, is equally important. The personal and relevant doctor is the one who will guide the patient on the appropriate management, whether through medication or specialized treatments, such as immunotherapy. One thing is for sure: Early diagnosis and proper treatment can significantly improve quality of life by effectively addressing bothersome symptoms.
